- A catalyst speeds a reaction by lowering
- its activation energy. Since less energy
- must be added to the reactants to make
- the reaction happen, more molecules can
- react per unit of energy added and
- the reaction can proceed more quickly.
- In biological situations, catalysts
- known as enzymes often speed
- reactions. Enzymes do more than
- simply speed the reaction, they
- prevent the "wrong" reaction
- from occurring. For example, there
- are many enzymes in the stomach
- used in the digestive process.
- These enzymes perform specific duties.
- Those acting on amino acids in proteins
- do not act on fats.
